UCLA Entry

From 1-4 high the point guard enters to the wing and cuts to the block off the elbow back screen, which drags the help down and empties the strong side. The same big then turns and sets a side ball screen into a two-on-two with nobody home.

    3Phase 3

Drop it to the roller; the corner keeps the low man honest.

    • 5 passes to 4
    • 4 shoots

Teaching points

  • 1 passes to the wing and cuts over the top of the elbow screen, never underneath it.
  • Sit on the block for a beat. The pause is what pulls the low help down.
  • 1 then clears all the way to the corner so the strong side is genuinely empty.
  • 4 turns and screens the ball immediately after the cut. Do not admire the cut.
  • 3 lifts to the weak slot so there is a kick-out above the ball.

The UCLA cut is the oldest entry in the book and it still works, because it moves the ball to the wing and empties the strong side in one action. This version uses it as setup and then turns the same big into a ball screen.

1 enters to the wing and cuts to the block over the top of 4’s back screen. He waits there a beat, then clears to the corner. Now 4 turns, screens the ball, and the wing attacks a two-on-two with nobody left on that side of the floor.

The read

The value is the emptiness. By the time the ball screen happens, 1 is in the corner and the weak side is one pass away, so the low help defender has to decide between the roll and a shooter standing still.

If he sinks to the rim, the corner is open. If he stays, the roller has the front of the rim.

Teaching it

The cut is the part players get lazy about. Going under the screen instead of over it turns a back cut into a jog, and nobody guards it. Tell 1 to brush shoulders with the screener.

The clear-out matters as much. If 1 stops at the short corner, he brings his defender into the lane the ball screen needs. Corner, every time, and he stays there.

The pass and cut is public coaching vocabulary named for John Wooden’s high post offense, and the entry works from any 1-4 high alignment you already run.

Counters

  • Against a switch on the back screen, 1 has a big behind him going to the rim. Throw it over the top.
  • Against a team that top-locks the cut, 1 goes backdoor and the entry becomes a layup.
  • If the big drops on the ball screen, the wing has a pull-up from the middle of the floor.
