UCLA Cut
The guard passes to the wing, the post steps up to set a back screen at the elbow, and the guard cuts off it to the rim for the layup. The screener then pops back out to the top for a second ball from the coach.

Coaching points
- Screener: get there early and stand still; a moving screen is a foul.
- Cutter: wait for the screen, set your man up away from it, then cut shoulder to shoulder.
- Cut all the way to the rim with a target hand; do not drift.
- If your defender jumps the cut toward the ball, go behind him instead.
- Screener: after the screen, step out to the ball; you are the second option.
Phase by phase
1Phase 1
G passes to the wing. S sprints up from the block and sets a back screen at the elbow, back to the basket, wide and still.
- G passes to W
- S screens for G
2Phase 2
G takes a step away to set his man up, then cuts shoulder to shoulder off the screen and straight to the rim. W leads him with the pass for the layup.
- G cuts to the rim
- W passes to G
- G shoots
3Phase 3
Second ball: after the cutter is gone, S pops out to the top and the coach hits him for the shot. The screener is often the one who ends up open.
- S cuts to the top
- C passes to S
- S shoots
Variations
- Add a defender on the guard: if he jumps over the top to deny, the guard cuts the other side of the screen.
- Run it to both sides; rotate guard to screener to wing to guard.
- Live 2-on-2 with the guard and the screener against two defenders.
