Double Drag
Two trailing bigs set ball screens one behind the other before the defence has matched up. The first screener pops back to the top and the second rolls, so the one defender guarding both screens has to give up either the three or the rim.

Teaching points
- Wings sprint to the corners. Deep corners are what make the middle of the floor empty.
- The two bigs trail one behind the other, not side by side. A stagger, not a double.
- 1 uses both screens. Skipping the first one wastes the whole action.
- The first screener pops back to the top, the second rolls all the way to the rim.
- Get into it before the defense has matched up. Late, it is just a ball screen.
Double drag is transition offense with two screens in it. The wings run to the corners, the two bigs trail the ball, and instead of one of them setting a screen, both do, one behind the other.
1 comes off both. The first screener pops back to the top, the second rolls through to the rim. One defender is trying to cover both and the geometry does not allow it.
The read
The man guarding the first screener is the one in trouble. He is the only defender in front of the ball who can affect either screen, and there are two.
If he steps up to slow the drive, the pop behind him is a three. If he drops toward the rim with the roller, the pop is a three from further out and nobody contests it. If he switches, the second roller has a guard behind him.
Two screens, one defender, one possession. Make him pick.
Where it breaks
Speed. Drag screens work because the defense has not matched up yet, so a possession that walks the ball up the floor has already lost the advantage. The bigs have to run, and they have to run to a spot rather than toward the ball.
The second thing is the spacing between the screens. If the two screeners are level with each other, the defender guards both at once. Two or three metres apart, roughly eight to ten feet, one behind the other.
Corners matter too. A wing who stops at the wing brings his defender into the lane the roller needs.
Counters
- Against a switch on the first screen, the second screener is rolling against a guard.
- Against a blitz, the first screener catches at the top with four-on-three behind him.
- If the defense sinks on the roll, the trail three at the top is open.
