Pistol Flare
The early-offence guard-to-guard series: the point pushes the ball at the wing, hands it off, and then flares off the trailing big to the corner. The defender who jumps out on the handoff is the one who has to chase the skip pass.

Coaching-Punkte
- 2 comes up to meet the ball. The handoff happens at the wing, not at half court.
- 1 dribbles him into the exchange rather than standing and handing it over.
- 5 trails the ball and fills behind it. He is the flare screen, so he cannot be late.
- 1 flares away immediately after he gives it up. That is the whole point of the action.
- 2 drives it middle. A drive toward the sideline kills the skip pass.
Pistol is early offense, not a set. Two guards on one side of the floor, a big trailing the ball, and you go before the defense has matched up. This version ends with the passer flaring away to the corner he came from.
1 pushes the ball at the wing, 2 lifts to meet him, and the exchange happens on the move. 5 trails in behind. Then 2 drives middle while 1 flares off 5 down to the corner.
The read
The defender guarding 1 has just been part of a handoff, which means he is out of position and facing the wrong way. Every step 2 takes toward the middle drags him further from the man he is supposed to recover to.
The skip back over the top arrives while he is still trailing. If he anticipates it and jumps out, 5 has a clean roll behind the screen.
Teaching it
Get the timing of the trailer right and everything else follows. 5 has to arrive as the handoff finishes, not after. Too early and he is standing in the way of the drive; too late and 1 has nothing to flare off.
The drive matters as much as the screen. If 2 goes toward the sideline, the pass back is a long cross-court throw with a defender in it. Middle, two feet in the paint, then look back.
Programs number the pistol variants, often as a 21 or 22 call, but the digits do not mean the same thing everywhere. Pick your own words and be consistent.
Konter
- If they switch the handoff, 1 keeps the ball and attacks the bigger man in the open floor.
- If the handoff defender jumps out hard, 1 is already flaring and the skip is open.
- Against a switch on the flare, the screener rolls to the rim with a guard behind him.
