Wing Denial
A passer at the top, a wing and his defender. The wing walks his man in and breaks out for the catch; the defender keeps a hand and a foot in the passing lane, then takes away the backdoor cut without turning his back on the ball.

Coaching points
- Stay on the line between ball and man, one step toward the ball, chest to your man.
- Lead hand and lead foot in the passing lane; your feet do the work, the hand only fills the lane.
- Look over your lead shoulder: you see man and ball together and can take away the backdoor without spinning around.
- Keep a forearm on him to feel the cut; shoving him away with a straight arm is a foul.
- Deflect with the hand nearest the ball, so you never lose sight of your man.
Phase by phase
1Phase 1
W walks his man toward the block, then explodes out to the wing. D stays on the line between ball and man: chest to the wing, lead hand and lead foot in the lane, eyes over the shoulder.
- W cuts to the right wing
- D cuts to the right wing
2Phase 2
Overplayed, W plants and goes backdoor. D drops with him on the ball side, opening up to the ball only as far as he must, and gets back into the lane before the bounce pass.
- W cuts to the right block
- D cuts
- P passes to Woption
3Phase 3
Third try: W pops back out and gets the catch, then passes back to P and the rep starts again. Three catches, then swap roles.
- W cuts to the right wing
- D cuts to the right wing
- P passes to W
- W passes to P
Variations
- Live 1-on-1 after the catch, two or three dribbles to score.
- Rapid fire: a coach with several balls passes on every cut, the defender tries to tip every one.
- Run it from the wing to the corner, or on both sides of the floor at once.
