Shell Drill 4-on-4
Four on the perimeter, four defenders. The offense moves the ball and the defense moves on every pass into on-ball, one-pass-away and help positions; then a baseline drive tests the help.

Coaching points
- Move on the flight of the pass, not when it is caught.
- On the ball: pressure. One pass away: in the gap. Two passes away: in the help line.
- See man and ball: point a hand at each.
- Talk on every pass: ball, help, I've got the drive.
- Close out under control: short choppy steps, high hand, weight back.
Phase by phase
1Phase 1
Ball reversal. Everyone moves on the flight of the pass: X2 closes out, X1 jumps to the gap, X4 up to deny, X3 down to help.
- 1 passes to 2
- X2 cuts
- X1 cuts
- X4 cuts to the right wing
- X3 cuts to the high post
2Phase 2
Pass to the wing. X4 closes out with a high hand, X2 sits in the gap, X1 drops to the help line, X3 is the low man on the rim.
- 2 passes to 4
- X4 cuts to the right wing
- X2 cuts to the right elbow
- X1 cuts to the high post
- X3 cuts to the rim
3Phase 3
Baseline drive. X4 slides and stays on the hip; the low man meets the drive before the lane, and X1 sinks to cover the rim behind him.
- 4 dribbles to the right short corner
- X4 cuts to the right short corner
- X3 cuts to the right short corner
- X1 cuts
Variations
- Walk it first with no dribbles, then allow drives.
- Play it live once the offense has made three passes.
- Add pass-and-cut: the defender must jump to the ball and deny the give-and-go.
