Hedge and Recover
Two-on-two ball screen at the top. The screener's defender jumps out to hedge, forcing the ball handler wide and away from the basket; the guard's defender fights over the top of the screen; then the big recovers to the rolling screener before the pass can get there.

Coaching points
- The screener's defender calls the screen early and loud.
- Hedge at an angle that turns the ball handler back toward half court, not up the sideline toward the basket.
- The ball defender goes over the screen: chest to the screener's top shoulder, no space to slip through.
- Recover on the 'got ball' call, not before; sprint to the roller's line to the rim.
- The weak-side defenders (in the live version) tag the roller until the big is back.
Phase by phase
1Phase 1
The screener comes up to set the screen for a drive to the right. XS follows him up, a step behind and level with the screen, and calls it out early: 'Screen, screen!'
- S screens for G
- XS cuts
2Phase 2
Hedge: XS jumps out into the ball handler's path and pushes him wide. XG goes over the top of the screen, between screener and ball, and chases back onto the ball.
- G dribbles
- XS cuts
- XG cuts
3Phase 3
Recover: the moment XG is back on the ball, XS sprints back to the rolling screener and beats the pass there. Talk: 'Got ball! Back!'
- S cuts
- XS cuts to the high post
- G passes to Soption
Variations
- Walk it through first, then live with a 3-second shot clock after the hedge.
- Change the coverage: drop, switch, or ICE on a side screen.
- 3-on-3 with a weak-side helper who has to tag the roller.
