Floater Drill
A cone in the lane stands in for the shot blocker waiting at the rim. The player attacks it from outside the arc, stops short and goes straight up with a high, soft floater over the imaginary hand, then retreats to a new spot and attacks again from another angle.

Coaching points
- Stop your momentum: the jump goes up, not forward into the shot blocker.
- Release high and early, with enough arc to clear a reaching hand.
- Long step, short step, then up; the short step turns speed into height.
- Work both hands and both take-offs, one foot and two feet.
Phase by phase
1Phase 1
Attack the cone, long step then short step about two metres before it, and go straight up. Release high: the ball peaks around the top of the backboard.
- P dribbles to the high post
- P shoots
2Phase 2
Rebound, retreat outside the arc to a new spot, and attack again from the left with the left hand. Land where you took off, not into the cone.
- P dribbles to the left slot
- P dribbles to the high post
- P shoots
Variations
- Two minutes non-stop: every attack from a different spot and angle.
- Floaters only off one foot, then only off two feet.
- Tape on the floor at the take-off spot: jump and land on the tape so the floater goes straight up.
