Layup Progression
The layup learned in three stages on one side of the basket: a single step off the inside foot right next to the rim, then the full two-step rhythm, then one dribble in from the elbow. Every player has a ball and moves on only when the stage before looks right.

Coaching points
- Jump off the inside foot: left foot for a right-hand layup, right foot for a left-hand layup.
- Carry the ball on the outside, away from where a defender would be.
- Look at the top corner of the square and use the backboard.
- Only move to the next stage when the footwork in this one is automatic.
Phase by phase
1Phase 1
One step: right foot forward, ball held outside on the right hip. Step with the left (inside) foot, jump and lay it off the top corner of the square.
- P cuts to the rim
- P shoots
2Phase 2
Two steps from further out: right foot, then left foot, and up. Eyes stay on the target, not on the ball.
- P cuts to the rim
- P shoots
3Phase 3
One dribble from the elbow with the right hand, then the same right-left rhythm. The steps, not the dribble, decide the timing.
- P dribbles to the right block
- P shoots
Variations
- Do every stage on the left side with the left hand.
- Next stage: dribble in from the three-point line.
- Add a guiding defender who shades the dribbler to one side; finish on that side.
