Speed Dribble Layups

A line in each far corner. The player pushes the ball out in front and covers the floor in as few dribbles as possible, then finishes. The right line dribbles with the right hand and lays up with the right; the left line does both with the left.

Coaching points

  • Push the ball out in front at waist height; the ball goes, you chase it.
  • Fewer dribbles is faster: count them and try to beat your number.
  • Eyes up the floor, not down at the ball.
  • Slow down just enough for a controlled layup; a missed layup at speed is still a miss.

Phase by phase

  1. ABCD

    1Phase 1

Right line, right hand: push the ball out in front, chase it, eyes up. Stay in the lane between the sideline and the lane line, then cut in for the layup.

    • A dribbles to the right block
    • A shoots
  2. ABCD

    2Phase 2

Left line, left hand, left-hand layup. The finisher rebounds his own ball and jogs back up the sideline to the other line.

    • C dribbles to the left block
    • C shoots
    • A cuts

Variations

  • Race: first layup between the two lines wins a point.
  • Two dribbles allowed per segment: baseline to free-throw line, to half court, and so on.
  • Finish with a jump stop and a power layup instead.
